About Joan Mikkelsen, CFP, EPC
Following early retirement from the banking industry in 1998, I established my own financial services business and earned my Certified Financial Planner and Elder Planning Counselor designations. As a Mutual Fund representative and life insurance broker, I have access to more than twenty high-quality insurance and investment companies’ products, enabling me to choose the products that best meet my clients’ needs.
While being an advocate/caregiver for my Dad, who resided in a long term care facility for five years, I identified a need for assistance for elders and their families – provision of which has become my passion and a part of my business. I have been active on various committees to improve the quality of life for elders and their families, and belong to a number of professional organizations, including Advocis, Financial Planners Standards Council, Gerontology Association of Nova Scotia, and Halifax Estate Planning Council. I am a Charter Member of the Canadian Initiative for Elder Planning Studies, a founding member of Serving Seniors Alliance, and a regular contributor to Seniors’ Advocate. I reside in Dartmouth, NS. I currently serve on the board of directors for a long term care facility, and am active in my church and community.
